Winery
Tolpuddle Vineyard was purchased in 2011 by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith, owners of Shaw + Smith. It takes its name from the Tolpuddle martyrs, English convicts transported for forming an agricultural union in the 1830s.
In southern Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, the now mature Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines were planted by Garry Crittenden and Tony Jordan in 1988. The vineyard's silica soils over sandstone, north-east facing orientation, and gentle slope down to Back Tea Tree Road each contribute to engender grapes of flavour and intensity. The fruit is shipped to the Shaw + Smith winery in the Adelaide Hills where Adam Wadewitz makes the wine.
Tolpuddle Vineyard only produces two wines, both with outstanding reputations in their short lives. Tolpuddle Chardonnay is the winner of major international awards. The Pinot Noir is not far behind.
