Penfolds Magill Estate is where Penfolds was born. It is where in 1844 Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, just eight years after the settlement of Adelaide, settled in the new home they named The Grange.
In 2015 Penfolds opened the Denton Corker Marshall designed $10 million refurbishment of the site. With both vineyard and Adelaide city views the new Magill Estate cellar door is one of the world's few vineyards located within city boundaries. As well as the original winery buildings, most still in operation, the site includes 5.2 hectares of the Shiraz used to make Magill Estate Shiraz.
Now part of a major South Australian tourist attraction, the Magill Estate Shiraz vineyard is intrinsically linked to Penfolds's beginnings. Sourced from this vineyard on the edge of Adelaide's eastern suburbs, the wine is made at the original Penfolds winery.
