Mast Shiraz
Wine
Mount Langi Ghiran Mast Shiraz was first made in 2012 as a tribute to Trevor Mast, one of Australia’s pioneers of cool climate winemaking and the first winemaker at Mount Langi Ghiran.
The fruit is from one of Trevor Mast's favourite blocks, House Block 4. It is typically the coolest block on the property, steeply east facing. Mount Langi Ghiran itself bears over it from the west, casting a shadow.
The handpicked fruit is divided into batches for fermentation – some destemmed, some gently crushed and some included as whole bunches. Fermentation is in small open fermenters with hand plunging and foot treading.
After basket pressing, the wine matures in one third new French oak. It is neither fined nor filtered at bottling.
Dark ruby, Mount Langi Ghiran Mast Shiraz has intense red and black fruit flavours and wafts of spice that strike a fine balance with its granular tannins and natural acidity.
A superb example of cool climate Shiraz. Cellaring potential is 15 years.
