High Sands Grenache
Wine
Yangarra Estate High Sands Grenache is the flagship wine. It is grown in ancient sandy dunes at the highest point of the estate vineyard at Kangarilla in McLaren Vale.
The gnarly old bush vines were planted by Frederick Arthur Smart and his sons in 1946. There are six blocks of old Grenache; the High Sands Block at the top of the ridge has the deepest sand and the lowest vigour and yield.
These old vines are dry grown and thinned to 10 inches from the ground to create better air flow and light within the canopy. The handpicked grapes are cold soaked and fermented with wild yeast. No pressings are used.
The wine matures on lees for 12 months in seasoned French oak barrels. The individual barrels that best express the deep sand soils are selected for bottling without fining, just filtration.
Deep red purple, Yangarra Estate High Sands Grenache is powerful and fragrant with intense dark fruits, gritty long tannins and a lasting finish.
An outstanding Australian Grenache. Cellaring potential is 20 years.
