Yarra Valley Syrah
Wine
Mayer Yarra Valley Syrah comes from a small patch of vines on the steep slopes of the winery's cool climate Bloody Hill Vineyard, south of Healesville in the Yarra Valley.
The vineyard is so named because, according to winemaker Timo Mayer, "It's bloody steep!"
In signature Mayer style, the wine is wild yeast fermented in open vats, with 100 per cent whole bunch inclusion. Around a year of maturation on lees in French oak follows.
With minimal intervention the focus, the wine is handled only once: when it is blended to tank before bottling. There is no fining or filtration.
Crimson red, Mayer Yarra Valley Syrah is medium bodied with abundant silky tannins, spicy dark fruits and a long, focused finish. Cellaring potential is 10 years.
