Wine
McHenry Hohnen Hazel’s Vineyard Grenache Syrah Mataro draws from the winery’s southernmost vineyard, Hazel’s. The site combines cooling ocean influences with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine.
The wine is a southern Rhône style blend: mostly Grenache with Syrah (Shiraz) and a small percentage of Mataro. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately.
Fermentation takes place in vertical stone fermenters with no temperature control. The Grenache sees a significant whole bunch inclusion (50%) while the Syrah sees a smaller proportion. The Mataro is fully destemmed but not crushed.
Each batch is pressed to large format oak casks for malolactic fermentation in an underground cellar. Come spring, the wines are sulphured and matured prior to blending.
Bright red, McHenry Hohnen Hazel’s Vineyard Grenache Syrah Mataro has juicy, sweet fruit flavours and savoury spice in a frame of firm, gravelly tannins. Cellaring potential is seven years.
