Abel Pinot Noir
Wine
Sidewood Abel Pinot Noir draws from South Australia's first plantings of the Abel clone of Pinot Noir, sometimes known as the 'Gumboot' clone. All the fruit is handpicked.
Legend says that in 1974, the Abel clone departed Burgundy in a gumboot and travelled to New Zealand. It was caught by Customs Officer Malcolm Abel – hence its name – who became the first to graft the cutting into his own vineyard.
The grapes are wild yeast fermented in small batches with partial whole bunch and whole berry inclusion. The wine then matures in seasoned French oak.
Ruby red, Sidewood Abel Pinot Noir has ripe red fruit flavours underpinned by spicy, earthy characters and seamless tannins. Cellaring potential is seven years.
