Old Patch Shiraz
Wine
Tyrrell's Old Patch Shiraz draws from the iconic Old Hillside Vineyard at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Right in the middle sits the Old Patch, planted in 1867 – one of the oldest vineyards in the world.
This one superb patch of old Shiraz provides the fruit. It is grown on a steep, east facing aspect, in soils that are richer and darker than those on Tyrrell's Ashmans property.
The fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. Natural fermentation is in open concrete vats with a proportion of whole bunches. Colour, flavours and tannins are gently extracted with hand plunging and soft pump overs.
The wine matures in a single large format French oak vat for around 14 months to develop its character.
Deep purple, Tyrrell's Old Patch Shiraz is made in the mould of great Hunter reds, medium bodied and elegant with deceptive length. Its fruit and acidity are perfectly balanced.
It is made only in outstanding vintages. Cellaring potential is 20+ years.
