The Caledonian Cabernet Shiraz
Wine
Katnook Estate The Caledonian Cabernet Shiraz is made in tiny quantities and only in exceptional vintages.
Caledonia is a poetic name for Scotland. The wine honours Scotsman John Riddoch, founder of the Coonawarra wine region, who in 1896 made his second vintage in what is today the Katnook Estate barrel room.
The wine celebrates the Australian tradition of combining Cabernet and Shiraz as well as capturing a sense of Coonawarra's renowned terra rossa soils. Typically small additions of Petit Verdot and Tannat or Merlot complete the blend.
Select parcels of wine are matured in oak, a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak depending on the vintage.
Deep red, Katnook Estate The Caledonian Cabernet Shiraz has rich layers of concentrated fruit and oak and fine, lingering tannins. Cellaring potential is 18 years.
