Established in 1975 under the name Heemskerk, Jansz Tasmania pays homage to the Dutch explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman, who first sighted the island in 1642. In 1997 the Hill-Smith family purchased the vineyard.
Situated in the Tamar Valley close to Bass Strait, Jansz Tasmania's red basalt soils, and unforgivingly cold climate, allow the grapes to ripen slowly and develop the lingering acidity essential for sparkling wine. In partnership with Champagne house Louis Roederer, Heemskerk was Tasmania's first sparkling winemaker to produce varieties in the traditional méthode champenoise. Now recognized as one of Australia's distinguished sparkling producers Jansz Tasmania describes their antipodean technique as méthode Tasmanoise.
Jansz Tasmania is solely devoted to sparkling wine. Their leading wine is the Single Vineyard Chardonnay, made from one tiny block of hand tended vines, followed by Vintage Cuvée and Vintage Rosé.
