In 1968 Usher Gordon Tinkler and his two sons, Usher William and Ian Geoffrey, were growing grapes for McWilliams on their Hunter Valley property. In 1996 Usher William's son Usher John made the family's first wines, founding the Tinklers label.
This House of Usher is at Pokolbin, where their hardwood cellar door sits beneath century old peppercorn trees. They craft single vineyard wines selecting grapes row by row from individual blocks. Varieties are matched to their ideal soil: the Shiraz grows in pockets of volcanic basalt over limestone, while the Chardonnay and Semillon grow in sandier soils. Small batches and traditional techniques capture Pokolbin character in Tinklers' wines.
Tinklers Old Vine Shiraz and U&I Shiraz lead the reds, while the Reserve Semillon and Poppy's Chardonnay lead the whites.
