At the Winery
Winery
Robert and Lorna Stein established their winery in 1976. Their grape growing family lineage dates from 1838, when the Macarthur family bought Johann Stein out from Germany to manage their Camden Park vineyard.
The Stein family were among the first to successfully plant Riesling in Australia. The Mudgee vineyard is 550 metres above sea level on a gently sloping site. Soils range from shale to quartz in the upper part of the vineyard, becoming richer and loamier further down the slope. At this altitude the vineyard experiences warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to develop mature flavours while retaining natural acidity.
Not surprisingly Riesling is the leading variety, with three Riesling styles made most years. Robert Stein's The Kinnear also stands out, followed by the Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay.
