Eocene Ancient Earth Shiraz
Wine
Maxwell Wines Eocene Ancient Earth Shiraz is a single vineyard wine from the most northern part of the estate, on the corner of Olivers and Chalk Hill Roads in McLaren Vale.
The soil is alluvial grey brown loam over limestone. The geology of this area was created 35 million years ago during the Eocene Epoch, inspiring the wine's name.
The vines, planted in 1994, are 1654 clone Shiraz. The fruit is open fermented with regular pump overs. Once pressed the wine matures for 24 months, typically in French oak with some American oak in select years.
Deep purple, Maxwell Wines Eocene Ancient Earth Shiraz is full bodied with generous fruit weight, fine oak tannins and a rounded edge. Cellaring potential is 12 years.
